Monsoon weather can change within minutes. Check official alerts, travel with an experienced leader and accept that a safe organizer may shorten or cancel a route. Waterproofing does not replace caution: move slowly on polished basalt and keep distance from cliff edges and swollen waterfalls.
Pack a dry clothing layer, headlamp, whistle and protected phone. Never enter fast-flowing water for photographs. If thunder approaches, follow the leader away from exposed ridges. The goal is to experience the monsoon landscape and return safely—not to complete a route at any cost.
Read the warning before the itinerary
IMD publishes district warnings, nowcasts, radar and lightning products. Check them close to departure and treat a severe warning as operational information, not an inconvenience. A documented plan should define unsafe stream levels, visibility, lightning exposure and evacuation options before the group starts.
Lightning, water and edges
Leave exposed ridges when instructed, never shelter under an isolated tree as a casual rule, and follow official lightning advice. Do not enter fast water to test depth or take photographs. Fog can hide an edge and erase familiar landmarks. The safe decision may be to turn around before the destination.
